Five Steps to a Healthier Prostate

Our prostates have an extremely important job in our reproductive systems. For such a small organ it tends to cause a lot of problems due to its specific location and the tendency to inflame and swell easily. Maintaining a healthy prostate is important, especially if you want to avoid developing prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and prostate cancer; so, let’s go over some tips you can use to keep your prostate gland healthy and functioning properly.

1.      Exercise regularly

Regular exercise is vital for prostate health for a number of reasons. First, exercise increases blood flow and ensures that our bodies, including prostates, get enough oxygen. Second, exercising regularly decreases and balances out the amount of fat we have on our bodies. This is important, as a study has shown that people with a high percent of abdominal fat actually have a higher risk of developing benign prostatic hyperplasia. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to run and work out every single day, but at least try to incorporate both anaerobic and aerobic exercises into your day at least a few times a week.

2.      Maintain a healthy diet

You might have already read various articles floating around the internet claiming that you should focus on specific types of food in order to maintain or even treat prostate issues. The truth is, having a well-balanced diet and regular eating habits have a much larger impact than focusing on a couple of specific types. Try to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your daily diet, limit consumption of red meat and instead of having saturated fats from animal and dairy products choose healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts.

3.      Take supplements for your prostate

We all have busy, often hectic lives and maintaining a proper diet can sometimes be challenging. In case your daily diet is lacking, you might want to consider supplementing it with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D-3, and zinc. These have proven themselves to be rather useful for maintaining a healthy prostate, alongside beta sitosterol and saw palmetto. Just make sure to consult your family physician before you start taking supplements and check whether the daily limit specified on the bottle is, in fact, adequate.

4.      Go to screenings regularly

Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition where the prostate becomes enlarged and surrounds the urethra. The urethra is a tube that carries urine from our bladders and out of our bodies. Once the bladder is enlarged enough, it can block the flow of urine and lead to various problems. It happens in almost all men once they cross a certain age and currently, there is no cure.

This is why regular checkups and screening are important, as they allow doctors to catch and start treating this condition early on. If you suffer from BPH, try to relax before urinating, take your time and practice double voiding, or adding a pause in the middle of urination, before continuing.

5.      Dealing with prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is becoming a major health issue throughout the world. Although you might not experience any symptoms in the early stages, as it continues to progress, you will start to experience a frequent need to urinate, difficulty starting urination or a complete inability to urinate, burning and painful sensations and even painful ejaculations and blood in semen and urine. Treating it can be difficult and only a professional can suggest the proper course of treatment. Dr. Haddad, for example, is one of the leading experts when it comes to treatment of prostate cancer and if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, Dr. Haddad suggests that calling in the pros is a must.

Prostate issues are fairly common once we pass a certain age and they can quickly snowball into a larger and more pressing issue, if not treated early on. A healthy diet, exercise, and regular checkups are imperative if you wish to keep your prostate healthy and although prostate exams tend to be unpleasant, it’s a small price to pay in order to avoid experiencing serious health problems, some of which can be extremely difficult to treat.
