8 Supplements That Naturally and Safely Boost Fertility

Will that pregnancy strip ever read “positive?” If you have been trying for months or even years to conceive, it may feel like you will never be able to welcome a new life into the world. But it could be that your body simply isn’t getting what it needs to get pregnant.

The right natural supplements may be able to give your reproductive system the extra boost it needs. Let’s check out some natural supplements which support fertility.

Myo-Inositol

Is PCOS standing in the way of your becoming pregnant? Myo-inositol is a carbocyclic sugar that our bodies manufacture out of glucose. When you supplement with this substance, it increases your sensitivity to insulin. This, in turn, can lead to improvements in ovarian health. Through this mechanism, it may enhance fertility.

Para-Aminobenzoic Acid (PABA)

Para-aminobenzoic acid is another name for vitamin B10. PABA has a long history of use in promoting fertility. In fact, in a study back in 1942, 75% of participants who took PABA daily for 3-7 months became pregnant. Researchers have not focused on PABA and fertility over the decades since, but it appears to be a promising supplement with respect to conception.

Chaste Tree Berry Extract (Vitex)

Chaste tree berry extract, also known as “chaste berry” or “Vitex,” is an herbal remedy which over recent years has finally moved into the spotlight. Vitex can help balance the production of dopamine, prolactin, estrogen, and progesterone.

As described in this paper, “Improved fertility was later confirmed in a trial involving 44 infertile patients due to luteal phase defects, treatment with 40 mg of a dried Vitex agnus castus (VAC BNO 1095) preparation increased both, serum progesterone and estradiol [23, 24]. Following this treatment ovulatory cycles were present in 93% and the fertility rate was restored in 71.4% of the patients.”

Ashwagandha Extract

Ashwagandha extract comes from the Withania somnifera plant, also called “Indian ginseng” and several other names. It can reduce the production of stress hormones, leading to endocrine improvements. Additionally, it has a long history of use in treating infertility, preventing miscarriages, managing mental health, and more.

Shatavari Root Extract

Shatavari root extract comes from a species of asparagus called Asparagus racemosus. It is an antioxidant which helps to combat stress. According to this research, “Shatavari may improve female reproductive health complications including hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), follicular growth and development, oocyte quality and infertility possibly by reducing OS level and increasing antioxidants level in the body.”

Stinging Nettle Root Extract

Stinging nettle root extract comes from the Urtica dioica plant. While it has many traditional uses, one of them is in supporting fertility and childbirth. In some locations, it also is traditionally used to treat menstrual disorders.

Vitamin D

Do you spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun each day? If so, you probably are getting a lot of vitamin D. But if you live in a cloudy location like the Pacific Northwest or you work indoors all day, you could very well be deficient (it is more common than many people realize).

You can read a detailed review of vitamin D’s therapeutic potential for supporting fertility here. It states, “This review evidences vitamin D levels >30 ng/mL result in improved fertility outcomes.”

Folate

Folate, a.k.a. vitamin B9 is important both for fetal development and for fertility. According to this study, “The results of previous studies clearly emphasize that imbalances in folate metabolism and related gene variants may impair female fecundity as well as compromise implantation and the chance of live birth.”

You also may be interested in a study that looked at the effects of a combination treatment consisting of folate, progesterone, prednisone, and aspirin on women who had a history of multiple miscarriages.

The researchers reported, “A combination treatment of prednisone, aspirin, folate, and progesterone is associated with a higher live birth rate compared with no treatment in women with IRM.”
