Work can be one of the most stressful areas of anyone’s life. We might wish we could do more or hope to do less. We might not think we’re earning enough or wonder what else is out there but be too afraid or comfortable to find out. Unfortunately, any stress you might feel in the workplace doesn’t get left there. It comes home with you and can affect every part of your life, as well as the lives of those who live with you. Therefore, it is important not to have too much stress in your career. This may sound impossible, but it can be done.
If something happens to you that you are unhappy about, don’t react. Reacting immediately can be a mistake because it is your first thought, and you won’t have had any time to calm down and assess the situation. You might say or do something that you later regret.
Rather than reacting, step away from the situation and think about what has happened. This way, you can work out why it happened and how to fix the issue, as well as how to prevent the problem from happening again. You may still not be happy, but at least you won’t be so stressed out.
It is extremely difficult to simply sit (or stand) and do a day’s work without being interrupted. It could be other people, the phone, emails, social media, or any number of other things. Whether you work alone or in an office full of other people, the result of these distractions and interruptions is the same; you won’t get your work done. This then leads to stress and upset and causes a knock-on effect that means you become more and more stressed as time goes on.
In order to be calm and get your work done, you need to eliminate these distractions. Turn off your phone and don’t check social media or your email until you have a break. Put up a do not disturb sign or wear headphones so you can block out the sounds. Whatever it is that usually distracts you, once it is no longer there you will be much less stressed.
If your job is causing you too much stress and happiness and if your home life is suffering because of it, the only answer is to move on and do something else. This could be your chance to start something else and be happy without any stress. It might be hard to do, but it will be worth it in the end.
It might, of course, not be the job you are doing at all that is making you stressed; it might be that you aren’t getting enough sleep and that is what is making everything much harder than it should be, and therefore stressful. Although it differs from person to person, the average amount of sleep each person needs is around seven to eight hours. If you’re not getting this amount, then it could be affecting your concentration and even your stress levels. Try going to bed earlier and see if you feel any different.
