Five Ways to Feel Good

Life can be pretty hectic these days, especially if you’re working flat out and juggling family responsibilities at home. It can be tiring, stressful and frustrating. So, it’s important we all take some ‘me time’ to chill, relax and re-focus our thoughts. There are lots of things you can do to rid yourself of stress, helping you to feel good about yourself, keep your health in check – and to maintain your composure. Here are five ways to help you feel good.

Strike a work-life balance

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, one of the first things you should be doing is reviewing your work-life balance. What is meant by that is how much time you are spending on the job, how much time you’re committing with your family, and how much personal time and space you have. If you feel that work is becoming too much, and you’re regularly working over hours, you should be reviewing your workload at the office and even speak to your manager to see if you can make things more manageable. If you’re running your own business, it’s tougher to justify time off when you are trying to boost sales, but you need to keep it in check to ensure you don’t overdo it and burn yourself out.

Instead, you should try and come up with a plan, a schedule for your week, one in which you allocate family and personal activities so that you’re factoring everything in. Of course, circumstances can change, so you’ll need to be flexible, but having a healthy work-life balance is truly important to help you keep in the best physical and mental shape.

At the heart of all this is your actual job. Are you happy in the industry where you are working? Do you get on well with your colleagues? Do you feel challenged, or over-challenged? If work is causing you some grief, then it’s probably time to review where you’re at in your career and maybe think of looking for a new position.

Look at your diet

What’s your daily food and drink intake like? They say you are what you eat, so bear this in mind in your daily and weekly routines. If you’re forcing convenience foods down your neck in five minutes every day because you don’t have any time, then this won’t be good for you in the long-term. Similarly, if you’re drinking lots of alcohol, or you’re not getting enough of fluid intake, this can all have an impact on your health and wellbeing.

If you’re putting on weight or feeling very tired all the time, this could be related to your diet. It is an indication that you need to review your calorie intake, your variety of foods and drinks – and whether it all needs to change. By changing now, you could save yourself from developing some serious and potentially life-changing health conditions.

If in any doubt about making changes to your diet, then talk to your doctor or another health expert who can advise you on what’s best for you. They’ll also be able to help you draw up an action plan, for you to work on a daily and weekly basis. Make no mistake, it will be tough, to begin with, but you’re likely to be very proud that you made the changes when you look back in the future.

Keep in shape

As well as keeping an eye on what you eat, you should also be focusing on your levels of fitness if you truly want to feel good. When we’re talking about levels of fitness, we’re referring to the amount of exercise that you get on a daily and weekly basis.

When was the last time you honestly thought about how much activity you are taking part in? If you have an office job, the chances are that you feel like you’re chained to the desk and only get up to go to the bathroom or have a break. After work, maybe you climb in the car to go home and just walk a few steps into the house.

If this sounds like you, then maybe it’s time to review how much exercise you are getting. If you work Monday to Friday, it doesn’t mean that you can’t incorporate some action into your week.

Also, if you’re currently taking the car to work every day, why not think about leaving it at home for at least a couple of days a week and walk or ride your bike instead? in addition, if you take public transport, you could walk to a later stop. If you’re feeling like you really want to push the boat out, you could don your running gear and get a few kilometers in during your lunch break. Most offices have shower facilities, so don’t worry about being all hot and sweaty when you’re back at your desk!

Join a class

Feeling good doesn’t just come from running, cycling or competing in a sport, there are loads of other activities that you could take up to boost your well being. Ever tried yoga, pilates or tai-chi? It could be just the tonic to help you focus on body and mind. Ask your friends and work colleagues to see if they can recommend any classes local to you. If not, just go online and search around. You’re bound to find something near you.

Take a holiday!

For many, the ultimate pick-me-up is a holiday away from it all. So, if you’re feeling in need of some rest and relaxation, and maybe some sunshine, why not have a look around for a good deal for a trip abroad. If you don’t have family commitments and can take time off work easily, then shop around for a last-minute bargain.

This time next week you could be relaxing on a beach with the sun on your face, and the lap of waves in the background. What could be more uplifting?

Of course, you don’t have to go overseas; you could take a break closer to home. Time away from your home routine can make a real difference wherever you go.
