Why Is It Important to See a Dentist? The Top Reasons and Benefits

We all need some sooner or later, whether or not we care to admit it. It might be mostly when we are young, or it could be when we are older and into our senior years, but everyone will need some dental work done at some point. According to Dental Professionals of Jersey City,  people who drink 3 or more glasses of soda each day have 62% more tooth decay, fillings, and tooth loss than others.

Regular dental visits are important because they help to keep your teeth and gums healthy. During the dental check-up, your dental professional will check your overall oral health for any trouble areas. During the cleaning, your dental professional will remove any plaque and tartar buildup and may polish your teeth.

There is a wide range of reasons why people need dental work eventually. These reasons mostly include:

  • Injury to the mouth
  • Natural wear and tear
  • Diet: What they eat or drink is giving them acid reflux, wearing down the enamel on the teeth, or it is high in sugar, resulting in cavities.
  • Genetics
  • Lack of dental care habits: They have fallen out of caretaking habits and don’t take proper care of their teeth.
  • Long-Term Depression: This can result in the person not taking care of their oral hygiene to the point where they need extensive dental work done.

Benefits of Dental Work

There are many benefits to having dental work done, even if it is something as simple as teeth cleaning. These benefits include:

  • Oral cancers are detected sooner
  • Gum disease can be detected earlier, which can also reveal related cardiovascular disease
  • Finding and fixing broken fillings
  • Regular teeth cleaning prevents gum disease
  • Good oral health will improve self-esteem, which boosts confidence

Building Good Habits

If you have fallen out of the habit of taking care of your oral hygiene, it can be hard to get back into it. Although it might be difficult at first, and you might not feel like doing it at that time, but you can eventually build up the habit once more. Here are some ways to get back in the habit.

  • Set a phone reminder: Set a notification twice a day when you know you will be home. If you have eaten, brush your teeth. If you are eating, or haven’t eaten yet, set an alarm for the time you think you will have finished eating.
  • Put a calendar in the bathroom: Each time you brush your teeth, put a line through the date. If you want to brush your teeth once per day, you could have a diagonal line. Twice, you could make an X. If you want to brush three times per day, you could black out the entire calendar square.
  • Make it part of your morning and night routine: While getting ready in the morning, take the time to include brushing and flossing your teeth. This can be done while showering, or leaving a facial scrub on your face for a few minutes before rinsing.
