Herbal supplements have been in use for a long time. The herbal supplements are made from selected plants. Almost every culture has been associated with herbal supplements in the past. These herbs have been used to prevent or heal certain ailments. They are known for their minimal side effects. This makes them a preference for many people all over the world. The first pharmaceuticals relied on herbal substances or components to come up with their medicines. Research has been ongoing to better the herbal supplements. Many countries have embraced herbal supplements as an alternative or complement to synthetic medicine.

Many centers have been established to do further clinical studies and tests on herbal supplements. Most of these supplements are not registered for medical use, however; their results have been very encouraging. Moreover, for quality, quantity and side effects, it is important to have a medical practitioner’s opinion before using them.

Garcinia cambogia became popular worldwide after being featured on the Dr. Oz show in 2012.

It is a small, green fruit, shaped like a pumpkin.

The skin of the fruit contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA). This is the active ingredient in garcinia cambogia extract, which is marketed as a diet pill.

How it works: Animal studies show that it can inhibit a fat-producing enzyme in the body and increase levels of serotonin, potentially helping to reduce cravings (12).

Effectiveness: One study with 130 people compared garcinia against a dummy pill. There was no difference in weight or body fat percentage between groups (3).

A 2011 review that looked at 12 studies on garcinia cambogia found that, on average, it caused weight loss of about 2 pounds (0.88 kg) over several weeks (4).

Side effects: There are no reports of serious side effects, but some reports of mild digestive problems.



Though listed as an herbal supplement, it is a fish product. This could be a good source of weight loss. Research is still ongoing to have concrete scientific backed evidence.



Got from the Konjac plant, this is a fiber supplement able to take care of obesity and other overweight related cases. However, studies are still going on to authenticate its effectiveness. Apart from slight side effects, the supplement is relatively safe.


Bitter orange

This supplement can be used to burn calories; however, more research needs to be done. You may experience some slight discomfort if you take the supplement with other natural weight fighters.

Green coffee beans are simply normal coffee beans that haven’t been roasted.

They contain two substances believed to help with weight loss, caffeine, and chlorogenic acid.

How it works: Caffeine can increase fat burning, and chlorogenic acid can slow the breakdown of carbohydrates in the gut.

Effectiveness: Several human studies have shown that green coffee bean extract can help people lose weight (56).

A review of 3 studies found that the supplement made people lose 5.4 more pounds (2.5 kg) than placebo, a dummy pill (7).

Other benefits: Green coffee bean extract may help lower blood sugar levels, and reduce blood pressure. It is also high in antioxidants ( 8910).

Side effects: It can cause the same side effects as caffeine. The chlorogenic acid in it may also cause diarrhea, and some people may be allergic to green coffee beans (11).

Use raspberry ketone daily to realize weight loss. With no known side effects, this could be an ideal supplement for managing your weight. Research is still going on to ascertain its viability.
