Top Remedies for Dry Mouth During Pregnancy

There are all kinds of symptoms that go along with being pregnant, and most women are aware of the common ones and are prepared to deal with them for that nine-month period. But then there are those little-talked-about symptoms that can catch you off-guard and leave you wondering if that’s a “normal” symptom of pregnancy, and what exactly if anything, you can do about it?

One of those symptoms that fit into the lesser talked about the category is a dry mouth. A dry mouth while pregnant is something that is actually a lot more common than you may think, so you certainly aren’t alone if you are suffering from it. Dry mouth is most common during the first trimester and can be worse at night. It can also be paired with cracked lips, a dry and stuffy nose, a metallic taste in your mouth, indigestion, and headaches.

So, if you are one of the unfortunate women who seem to be dealing with dry mouth while pregnant and you are wondering what you can do about it, here are some home remedies that can help to alleviate it.

Boost Your Liquid Intake

One of the first tips is to make sure that you are staying properly hydrated at all times. Fluids are needed to help the woman’s body produce enough amniotic fluid and support the extra blood supply that is needed by the baby. Of course, drinking enough fluids will also help to soothe a dry throat and mouth. Ideally, you want to stick to water and herbal teas.

Liquids such as coffee and soda should be avoided, as they will cause dehydration and make a dry mouth worse. They also contain caffeine, which shouldn’t be consumed during pregnancy.

Start Drinking Aloe Vera

Aloe vera juice is a wonderful item to have in your arsenal when it comes to fighting dry mouth. It actually triggers your salivary glands, which will then create more saliva. More saliva means relief for your dry mouth. It’s recommended that you drink 1/4 aloe vera juice daily, and you can rinse your mouth with the juice.

Ginger Will Trigger Saliva Production and Freshen Up Your Mouth

Ginger can also provide the same sort of results and trigger your salivary glands. It also has the added benefit of giving you a fresh feeling in your mouth. Simply chew on a small piece of fresh raw ginger and you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits immediately.

Use a Humidifier in Your Home

Keeping the air in your home moist will also help to alleviate a dry mouth. This is especially helpful at night when you are sleeping and your mouth tends to get even drier. Invest in a good quality humidifier that is able to provide enough moisture for the size of your room. Just be sure you empty the water basin daily and clean it. This will prevent mold and bacteria from growing.
