5 Signs Your Job Is Deteriorating Your Health

Having a job is an inescapable part of many adults’ lives. Some have it better than others, as they work a job that they enjoy and one that offers them many benefits. Others have it worse, and the biggest measure of a job taking its toll on someone is health deterioration. Here are five telling signs that your job is negatively affecting your health so you can make necessary changes in your life.

1. It’s Affecting Your Personal Relationships

If you find that your personal relationships are suffering and you can pinpoint the start of the issues to around the time you started working, your job may be the culprit. Working in a place where it’s hard to get a break and where you find that your personal time is practically still your job’s time can leave you without the energy to invest in your personal relationships. It can get to the point of having a divorce, which happens to between 40% and 50% of marriages in the United States. Before it comes to such extremes, find out if your job is the reason your personal relationships are getting strained and seek help to make the necessary changes before things worsen.

2. You Constantly Feel Lethargic

Constant lethargy and fatigue are signs of being stressed, and if you’ve been feeling them since you started working at your current job, it may very well be the culprit. If you feel like you cannot get energized even after sleeping and don’t have the energy to drive to do things you used to enjoy doing before, it may be a sign that your job is draining you both mentally and physically. Try to find out if there’s anything else that may be causing you lethargy, and if there isn’t, it’s probably your job.

3. You Don’t Have Time for Your Health

If you’ve been neglecting your health since you started working your current job, this is a sign that the job is taking a toll on your health. You need to visit a doctor at least once every year for a general checkup and evaluation to make sure that there are no issues and that you are current on all your vaccinations. If you don’t have time for this, it may mean that your job has taken away your sense of care and that you don’t feel invested in taking care of your health anymore.

4. You Can’t Seem to Recover From the Workweek

The weekends and holidays are times for relaxing and taking a break from work, so it’s important to find activities that help you relax. If it’s hard for you to relax after a workweek even if you have some free time to do something unrelated to work, it’s a sign that you’re finding it hard to recover from the workweek. Constant fatigue and stress carried over from work is a sign that your job is stressing you out more than it should.

5. You Keep Fantasizing About Retiring (Even If It’s Very Far Away)

Working in a job that leaves you anxious and stressed can have you fantasizing about retiring even if you’re not close to your retirement age. You may also have fantasies about quitting your job on the spot more often than not, and this is a sign that your mental health is suffering and is calling out for help. You can join the two-thirds of millennial employees who left their current positions in 2020 by looking for a new job in 2022!

If you are experiencing any of the five signs above, it’s a sure sign that you need to seek help and look for a new job as soon as possible. Doing this will help you reclaim your mental health so you can start to live your best life again.
