How Can I Know My Vaginal Dilator Size?

When shopping for silicone vaginal dilators, it may be difficult to know what size silicone vaginal dilators you need. If you ask your pelvic floor physical therapist, gynecologist, or physician, they should tell you what size of silicone vaginal dilator you should use to start your dilator therapy.

If you cannot consult a trained professional at the moment, here is a detailed guide on how to know which silicone vaginal dilator size would be a good start for you.

How to Pick Your Silicone Vaginal Dilator Size

Here is all you need to know to help you know your vaginal dilator size.

The Different Sizes Available

When it comes to silicone vaginal dilators, there are eight sizes from which you can choose. The smallest dilator, size #1, is comparable to a pencil, and the next size, size #2, is comparable to a woman’s pinky finger.

If you can get a tampon in easily, you can start with a size #3 or a size #4. If you are sexually active, you may not need the smaller silicone vaginal dilators, and starting with a size #4 or #5 would be best for your dilator therapy.

Also, if you are sexually active, you can purchase a silicone vaginal dilator whose size is similar in circumference to your partner’s size.

How To Increase Dilator Size

When you start dilator therapy, you want to use your starting size for three to four weeks before switching to a bigger size. When you are ready to transition to a new size, start your therapy session with the smaller dilator and introduce the bigger size during the session.

Repeat this cycle for a few days before completely transitioning to the bigger size. This will prevent vaginal tears (lacerations) or other injuries to the vaginal tissues.

Using Silicone Vaginal Dilators

When choosing a silicone vaginal dilator size, it is always a good idea to start small and gradually increase the size. Doing so allows you to gently stretch the vaginal walls before transitioning to a larger size.

Follow this simple process that will help you know your silicone vaginal dilator size for optimal success in:

  • Improving Vaginal Dilation;
  • Keeping the Vaginal Tissues Pliable; and
  • Stretching, widening, and lengthening the vaginal walls; and
  • Reducing Pain and Discomfort during Pelvic Exams or Penetrative Intercourse.

Be Consistent for Better Results

Remember, patience and consistency are key when using silicone vaginal dilators. It is a slow process, but if you remain consistent, you will get the results you want.
