The Importance of Quality Sleep to Healthy Living

In the fast-paced world we live in, it can be difficult to find enough time to get quality sleep every night. However, the lack of quality sleep has created a crippling epidemic of obesity, anxiety, and many other issues that continue to affect the population. In today’s short article, we’re going to dive a little deeper into why getting quality sleep is so important to living a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Decrease Your Risk of Obesity

You may be wondering what sleep has to do with being fat and we’re going to explain it to you. This risk factor was identified in a study done on both groups of adults and children to determine the link, if any, between obesity and sleep. The study found that children were 89 percent more likely to be obese when they got short sleep. The same study found that adults were 55 percent more likely to be obese when suffering from chronic poor sleep. The actual link between obesity and poor sleep is thought to be due to a number of factors. Some of these include decreased hormones, lack of motivation for exercise, and comfort eating.

Better Athletic Performance

The importance of quality sleep has been notated greatly in the last few years in the athletic world as more and more sports medicine doctors are prescribing sleep for their top clientele. When the body is deprived of sleep, it loses its ability for precise coordination, speed, reaction time, and so much more.

These are all key skills that make an athlete perform well. This is why top performing athletes are told to get more quality sleep. Whereas any old bed was considered good enough for an elite athlete of the past, the 21st-century competitor is told to sleep on an organic memory foam mattress and other top-of-the-line bedding for optimal rest between outings.  As they travel around for their games, they’re encouraged to bring along things like memory foam pillows and toppers or sleep machines in order to help them get more quality sleep on the road.

Improve Productivity and Concentration

While there are many studies backing these enhanced brain functions up, there’s one simple truth. Think about when you wake up after a poor night’s rest. You can’t really concentrate and you’re not productive at work. Think of a day where you get enough rest. You’re active, more productive, and can concentrate on any issue at hand. A good night’s sleep is essential to let your brain recharge and improve your concentration, memory, problem-solving abilities, and overall productivity.

It Prepares You for Quality Social Interactions

Those who find themselves sleep deprived on a normal basis tend to spend less time involved in social interactions. Many will actually avoid them as much as possible. This has been shown to drastically affect a person’s social wellbeing as they’re not capable of interacting effectively with others. Studies have shown that those who are at a lack of sleep have a reduced ability to recognize expressions from those around them. These important social cues are what normally allow us to process emotional information. When we’re tired, we tend to avoid social interactions as our brain doesn’t correctly process this emotional information.

Decrease Your Risk of Depression

Mental health illnesses including depression and anxiety are highly linked to poor sleep quality. In fact, studies show that 90 percent of those who have depression have poor quality sleep. It’s no wonder that depression and anxiety are more likely when you’re in a sleep deprived state. As you learned above, you withdraw socially, cannot react physically as you could on a full night’s rest, and have difficulty focusing on what you’re doing throughout the day.

Getting quality sleep each and every night is a major contributor to your overall health. Those who get poor quality sleep find themselves not functioning at their best and, over time, this can lead to many poor health problems like obesity and depression. Those who get a quality night’s sleep can find themselves operating at 100 percent and drastically decrease their risk for health problems.
