Can Ayurveda Actually Cure Diabetes?

Diabetes is no longer considered as a rare and occasionally occurring disease, it is quite common and every third individual in the world is being affected by diabetes. Although there is a huge misconception that eating sweets and sugars causes diabetes, it is the inability of the human body to respond to insulin.

Diabetes – what is it?

As said earlier, diabetes is the inability of the human body to respond to the insulin that is produced in the pancreas. The insulin production reduces drastically and this result in an increase in blood sugars and this leads to abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates.

Diabetes has been considered as a lifelong disease with no cure for it, however, modern-day science considers it curable and reversible and manageable with proper lifestyle change, proper diet and a stress-free day to day life.

Types of diabetes

Type 1

This disease occurs at an early age or adolescent age due to infection in the body. Here, the body becomes vulnerable and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the body. Type 1 diabetes is lifelong and requires Insulin injections in order to control the sugar levels in the blood.

Type 2

This disease can occur at any age due to poor lifestyle, obesity, unhealthy food habits, and less physical activities. Here, the pancreas is not able to produce the required amount of insulin and thereby, increasing the blood sugars to a higher level.

  • Frequent urination
  • Concentrated urine
  • Increased thirst
  • Dry and sensitive skin
  • Increased hunger
  • Poor eyesight
  • Frequent tiredness and weakness
  • Increase in body weight
  • Anemia

Glucose regulating drugs are prescribed in order to control the high blood sugars which in turn has some huge side effects such as gastritis, hyperacidity, stomach problems, development of kidney stones and more.

10 Ayurvedic Treatments That Work

Ayurveda follows the principle of doshas which is made of three components – Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. Any imbalance between the three components causes malfunctions of the body. According to Ayurveda, diabetes type 2 is a result of the imbalance of Kapha dosha and Ayurvedic practitioners believe that a few lifestyle changes and active lifestyle can help in managing and controlling type 2 diabetes.

Natural remedies to manage diabetes type 2

Bel leaves

These leaves are loaded with anti-diabetic properties thus, help in regulating the blood sugars. It can be consumed either as juice mixed with honey, consumed three times a day or as a powder mixed with black pepper powder.

Bitter gourd juice

This juice is a boon for those suffering from diabetes, although they might be bitter and unappetizing, one glass juice mixed with lemon juice and turmeric works wonders in regulating the blood sugars.

Methi or Fenugreek seeds are also a boon for people suffering from diabetes. These seeds can be consumed in multiple ways. One can take it 

  • Soak in water and consume the seeds by chewing them as a whole
  • A ground paste of soaked seeds, sieved and mixed with water
  • Power of the seeds mixed with turmeric and a glass of milk
  • Ground methi seeds can be mixed with the wheat flour to make chapatis and consumed daily.

This spice is another magical roll that helps in effective management of blood sugars. Cinnamon powder when consumed on a daily basis reduces the production of glucose thereby, controlling diabetes. one can boil 3-4 tablespoon powder in one liter of water for 15 minutes and consume the water for the entire day.

Jamun seeds

These seeds are another way of regulating the blood sugars by preventing the conversion of starch into sugar and can be consumed either as powder and consumed twice a day with warm water or Jamun leaves can be chewed in order to control sugars.

Amla or Gooseberry

Amla’s properties are well known in treating diabetes and 20ml juice of the fruit is enough to control blood sugars. the juice needs to be consumed on an empty stomach each morning.

Triphala

Triphala is an ancient ayurvedic preparation that is helpful in regulating the blood sugars. A decoction of Triphala, the root of barberry, colocynth, and moth should be prepared in equal parts and mixed with turmeric and consumed with warm water on a daily basis.

Key changes to food and lifestyle

Natural remedies are a great way of regulating, managing and controlling diabetes in addition to lifestyle changes and a healthy diet, an increase in physical activities and such.  Apart from these, one can…

  • Increase the fiber content in the diet
  • Add more whole grains as they are great regulators of glucose sensitivity
  • Eat onion, garlic, fish, Bengal gram, green leafy vegetables, and fresh, seasonal fruits
  • Cheese and other dairy products should be made of skimmed milk
  • Avoid intake of sweets, potato, sweet potato, yam, and other cholesterol loaded food on a regular basis
  • Brisk walking one hour each day will help in reducing the blood sugars
  • Barley is the best grain in controlling diabetes. It can be consumed as a powder mixed in your porridge or pancakes or boiled in water and had daily
  • Proper sleeping pattern, at the right time and in the right quantity
  • Avoid stress and situations that aggravate the stress levels
  • Practice yoga and pranayamas in order to curb stress and lower the sugar levels

Ayurveda is the safest and best way to treat and control diabetes as there are no side-effects and they are quite effective too, provided you follow them regularly and include a few lifestyle changes.
