Yoga Pose for Breast Cancer – Root Lock KRIYA Breathing

root-lock-kriya

By Diana Ross, E-RYT 500 Founder of Breast Cancer Yoga

Root Lock KRIYA is a pose that when coupled with the breath has profound results. It brings the subtlety of the breath awareness along with the lifting up and in of the pelvic floor. This has a large impact on strengthening the pelvic floor so that the worry of leakage is minimized. As women age, this becomes a large concern. Even without aging sneezing or laughing on a full bladder can have unwanted results. Root Lock KRIYA will be the answer for these concerns.

Benefits of Breath

  • Expands breath into compressed region
  • Lengthen and reeducate the breath
  • Free the breath in the intercostal muscles
  • Relaxes the nervous system thus creating an inner calm
  • Affects inner life energy currents (pranas)
  • Opens the sushuma nadi (energy spine)
  • Creates pelvic stability and strength
  • Builds transverses abdomens

Benefits of Root Lock

  • Decreases incontinence
  • Strengthens the entire pelvic floor muscles – decreasing prolapse in uterus
  • Starts the alignment of the spine
  • Considered base of spine (mula bunda)
  • Increases a strong  inner awareness of holding the pelvic floor up and in

Instructions

  1. Begin on your back with knees bent, feet slightly apart in PARTIAL RECLINE. Blanket and head pillow is used for comfort and support.
  2. Place a yoga block (at it’s narrowest width) between the knees.   Keep your feet and back on the ground; the lumbar curve may flatten slightly.
  3. INHALE deeply, EXHALE and sequentially begin squeezing your knees into the block with your hip adductors while lifting the pelvic floor up and in – pulling the transverses abdomens toward your spine. The entire pelvic floors lifts inward.
  4. INHALE, and sequentially relax the transverses abdomens, release the pelvic floor and hip adductors without dropping the block.
  5. Repeat 10 times. Be very slow and deliberate. Take notice of the entire pelvic floor lifting and releasing.

To experience the benefits of yoga for breast cancer, it is essential that you begin with simple, gentle yoga movements. You should also consult a doctor before you begin practicing yoga. It is also necessary that you follow a yogic diet that consists of a mainly vegetarian diet to enhance the benefits of yoga.
